How to Care for Mulberry Silk

Mulberry silk is stronger than it looks, but it rewards a gentle hand. A little care keeps the colour deep and the hem soft for years.

Washing

Hand-wash in cool water with a drop of mild detergent, or a dedicated silk wash. Don't soak for more than a few minutes, and never wring or twist — press the water out gently between your palms or a towel. Skip the washing machine and the tumble dryer.

Drying

Lay flat or hang in the shade, away from direct sun and radiators, which fade and weaken silk. Take it down while still slightly damp.

Pressing

Iron on the lowest (silk) setting, on the reverse, while a touch damp — or simply hold a steamer a few inches away. Avoid pressing hard over the hand-rolled edge, so it keeps its soft, raised roll.

Everyday habits

  • Spray perfume and hairspray before you put the scarf on — alcohol stains silk.
  • Store loosely folded or rolled, out of direct light; avoid plastic, which traps moisture.
  • Treat marks quickly with cool water and patience, never heat.
Buy once, care a little, keep it for years. That's the whole idea.
