What are Gatz scarves made of?
Every foulard is 100% mulberry silk with hand-rolled edges. Mulberry silk is the long-fibre grade, which is what gives the fabric its weight and its quiet shine rather than a plasticky gloss. The edge of each square is folded over and stitched by hand — it is the slow part of making a scarf, and it is why the border has a soft rolled ridge instead of a flat machine hem.
How big are the foulards?
53 × 53 cm. That is the classic pocket-square-to-neckerchief size: large enough to knot at the throat or wind through your hair, small enough to keep in a bag without bulk.
Why do the dimensions vary slightly?
Because the edges are rolled by hand, not cut by machine. A millimetre or two either way is normal and is a sign the finishing is genuinely hand-done. We state 53 × 53 cm on every product page with that variation noted.
How do I wash and care for silk?
Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent made for delicates, or take it to a dry cleaner. Do not wring it, do not tumble dry it, and do not bleach it. Press the water out gently in a towel and dry flat, away from direct sunlight and radiators.
If you iron it, use the lowest setting, iron on the reverse side, and put a thin cloth between the iron and the silk. Spray perfume and hairspray before you put the scarf on, not after — alcohol marks silk.
Will the colours fade or run?
Silk is a natural fibre and the dyes sit in the fibre rather than on top of it. Wash the scarf on its own the first time, always in cold water, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun. Treated that way the colours hold for years. Heat, chlorine and long sun exposure are what dull them.
How can I wear a 53 × 53 cm foulard?
Four ways cover most of it: knotted at the throat over a shirt or blazer; folded into a band and tied through a ponytail or chignon; looped around a bag handle; or threaded through belt loops as a soft belt. Fold it corner to corner into a triangle first for neck knots, or roll it into a long band for hair and belts.
What else does Gatz make?
Alongside the silk foulards (€34–€44) we make folding hand fans (€38), hair clips (€14) and bag straps (€20). Everything is designed in Amsterdam and chosen to work together — a fan and a foulard in the same palette, for instance.
Is everything on the site in stock?
Yes. Everything shown on houseofgatz.com is physically in stock and ships from the Netherlands. We do not take pre-orders or backorders, and we do not list products we cannot send. If an item ever does sell out it comes off the site rather than staying up as unavailable.
How do I use a discount code?
Enter it in the Discount code field on the checkout page and press apply — the total updates before you pay. One code can be used per order. If a code is not working, email us the code and your order details before you place the order and we will check it.
Do you have a shop I can visit?
No — Gatz is an online store. Marnixstraat 69a, 1015 VC Amsterdam is our registered business address, not a showroom and not a returns address. Please do not send returns there; email us first and we will send you a free return label with the correct address.
