THE HOUSE
The finishing touch, obviously.
Gatz makes accessories. Only accessories. The silk square that changes a plain shirt, the fan that makes a hot room look deliberate, the wool scarf that turns a plain coat into a decision. We don't make the outfit. We make the part people remember.
WHAT WE DO
Accessories. Nothing else.
No sweaters. No coats. No trousers. We are not trying to dress you from the ground up, and we are a little suspicious of brands that try.
An accessory is the one thing in an outfit you actually choose. Everything else is a size. It is the place taste shows — and the place most brands treat as an afterthought, a bin by the till.
We treat it as the whole job.
The cherry on top, the difference-making detail, the dot on the i.
THE IDEA
Two worlds, worn at once
One is old money. Silk on the shoulder, a serif on the label, the manners of a house that has been doing this for a century.
The other is the party afterwards — a button too many undone, a scarf tied where nobody ties a scarf, someone who knows the rules well enough to break them in front of everyone.
Most brands pick one. We think the interesting people live in both. The woman at the club lunch in June is the woman at the festival in August. Same scarf. Tied differently.
HOUSE CODES
What a piece has to earn
Three questions before anything gets the name.
Does it change the outfit?
If you can take it off and nothing happens, it doesn't ship. An accessory that merely matches is wallpaper.
Does it survive a close look?
Hems, edges, the weight of a fold, the sound a fan makes when it opens. Nobody photographs these. Everybody feels them.
Is the price honest?
We price the object, not the logo. We would rather you own three pieces you reach for than save up for one you're afraid to wear.
We're not finished. Some things in the range are already where we want them; others are being pushed. We would rather say that than pretend otherwise.
THE NAME
From Amsterdam
Gatz is run from Amsterdam — narrow houses, bad weather, and people who dress better than they let on.
The name comes from James Gatz, the boy who became Gatsby: the outsider who got in and never quite lost the edge that got him there. We liked that more than we liked another borrowed French surname.
Gatz is an independent label registered in Amsterdam (KvK 93631588). Our pieces are made with partner workshops in China and shipped to you by our fulfilment partner in Ningbo.
THE RANGE
What we make
Silk squares in several sizes, from the small one that lives on a bag handle to the large one that works as a shawl. Hand fans, from pierced Spanish abanicos to embroidered florals. The Foulard Handle, which turns a scarf into a bag strap. Wool scarves for the cold months. More is coming, when we can do it properly.
She says little, laughs a lot, and everyone wonders who she is.
